What is Sensitive Skin?

According to Medical News Today, “Sensitive skin is a common issue but not a medical diagnosis in itself. The term generally refers to skin that is more prone to inflammation or adverse reactions. People with sensitive skin may have strong reactions to chemicals, dyes, and fragrances present in products that come into contact with the skin”.

Taking care of sensitive skin can be tricky and challenging. From an unexpected rash to uncontrollable redness, finding the solution to calming the skin can seem complicated and hopeless. However, do not settle! There are solutions to this problem, and I will share with you how I solved my problems with sensitive skin.

The most important thing is that you need to be willing to adapt to a new lifestyle. One that is clean, toxic- free, and simple.

Your environment, the food you eat, and of   course, the products you use on your skin, all have an impact on it's reaction. The solution is simple: as best as you can, establish a clean and natural lifestyle. This means eating healthy foods, getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of water, and using pure skincare products on your body.

My Journey

My journey with sensitive skin started about 3 years ago when I unexpectedly had a bumpy rash around my mouth, chin, and dry patches on the corner of my nose. I had absolutely no idea what it was. What i did know, was that it made me feel uncomfortable and not happy in my skin.

After weeks of uncomfortable rashes and hours of research, I found out it was a skin condition called “Perioral Dermatitis”.

According to AOCD, “Perioral Dermatitis is a facial rash that tends to occur around the mouth. Most often it is red and slightly scaly or bumpy. Any itching or burning is mild. It may spread up around the nose, and occasionally the eyes while avoiding the skin adjacent to the lips. The cause is unknown.”

Guide for Sensitive Skin

After seeing my dermatologist, who confirmed that is was “Perioral Dermatitis”, I was prescribed with medicated creams.

Believe it or not, my rash became worse as my skin rejected the treatment. I had to find a solution. By this point it was taking affecting my daily life. For example, I did not want to go to the supermarket because I was ashamed what people would think (and it was a shame, because I LOVE grocery shopping!)

I decided to do more reasearch. From the results, I came to the conclusion that steroid creams and over the counter treatments were not durable solutions to the problem.

The Solution

Instead, holistic and natural remedies were the only solution to a long term, complete fix. I started reading and hearing other babe's stories, talking about the natural at-home remedies they were making and using succesfully! It was then that I  discovered the immense benefits of pure, natural ingredients such as: Aloe Vera, Honey, Activated Charcoal, Natural oils and Essentials oils.

At this point in my skincare journey, my mom and I created Babe Essentials' best seller, the Clarifying Face Gel, an aloe vera gel base acne treatment. Luckily for me, my mother grows her own aloe vera plants. When I had flare ups, I took an aloe leaf, scraped out the gel and used it as face mask.

And just like that, our famous clarifying face gel was born. So simple, yet so powerful.

I was amazed at the results from a change so simple as using pure ingredients. After a week, my flare ups had decreased almost completely.

In October 2019, we developed Gentle Babe, Babe Essentials’ face oil for sensitive skin, to complete the sensitive skin routine. I personally use it as the last step, for extra moisture and hydration: It leaves my face moisturized and glowing. Bye-bye uncomfortable rashes!
